What kind of car should I get for the mountains?

I am looking for something reliable that if kept in good shape will last me a long time and a lot of miles. Also, I live in Colorado and need something that will get me in and out of the mountains with out any issues during the snowboarding season. My price range is around 4-8k. Any suggestions??
